The project aims to test the use of green hydrogen as an energy source for airport maintenance equipment for the first time in Finland. The pilot project marks a significant step towards lower-emission aviation.
Finavia’s pilot project will test the operation of a hydrogen-powered maintenance vehicle in January 2026 under Finland’s demanding climate conditions. Various tools, such as a sweeper blower and snow plough, can be attached to the vehicle, enabling versatile use in airport maintenance tasks year-round.
Reducing emissions in the aviation sector requires determined development work. Green hydrogen and its derivatives, such as synthetic aviation fuel eSAF, offer the aviation sector opportunities to reduce emissions in both airport ground operations and air traffic itself.
“Finavia achieved net-zero level carbon dioxide emissions in its own operations in 2025. Piloting green hydrogen in airport maintenance equipment is a concrete example of how we develop solutions that also support companies operating at the airport in reducing their own emissions. Through this project, we strengthen our role as an enabler of the green transition for the entire aviation industry,” says Sami Kiiskinen, Vice President, Airport Development at Helsinki Airport.

The pilot project provides Finavia with valuable information on the safe use of green hydrogen in the aviation sector and lays the foundation for broader adoption in the future. Finland can be a pioneer in reducing emissions in both ground and air operations when new energy solutions are boldly implemented. The pilot project is part of the EU-funded Interreg Baltic Sea Region HyAirport program.
